Re: [hylafax-users] caller ID issue
Also, with a USR modem I would recommend always upgrade to latest
firmware. In my own case (5688B in Class 1), this was essential for
reliable receiving from some machines.

USR modems are broken in many ways. Their Class 2.0 has lots of bugs,
and they seem to vary a little bit with different models. The Class 1
also has some flaws, but they seem less severe than the ones in Class
2.0.
Generally speaking running Class 1 is recommended over Class 2.0 anyway.

As far as single-port analog modems go I usually recommend the MultiTech
MT5634 series.
If you don't care about V.34-Fax (SuperG3) then almost any
Rockwell/Conexant or Lucent/Agere chipsetted modem *should* work quite
well if Class 1 is supported.
USR modems usually were using TI chipsets in the old days. These days
they're using 3Com chipsets which appear to me to function quite
similarly to those TIs.
