Thanks, Lee.  So far as I can tell, you're right; Modem works fine as 
long as you don't get any ModemGroups (even defining 'Any' in 
etc/config seemed to break it) involved.  I think I may be able to do 
what I want without having to deal with ModemGroups, though.
