I've tried it with both the new 4.2.1 and with HEAD this morning, with

the same results; the modem is set to 'any'.

admit that I may have messed up the config in some spectacularly
obvious way I'm just not seeing.

Off-hand I couldn't say what it is, however. I've never used ModemGroups myself. I do know that assigning the job directly to a modem in destcontrols works fine. I.e.:

Modem = ttyS0

Only it doesn't seem to be working when Modem refers to a ModemGroup. You should probably file a report on Bugzilla. Hopefully some developer that is familiar with ModemGroup can look at it.
