I've tried it with both the new 4.2.1 and with HEAD this morning, with 
the same results; the modem is set to 'any'.

My config files are available at 
http://mancala.semo.net/~aaron/etc.tar.gz -- I'm more than willing to 
admit that I may have messed up the config in some spectacularly 
obvious way I'm just not seeing.
