So then, I took the start for faxmodem out of the hylafaxscript and set it
separate into runlevels 3 & 5. From the boot.log:

<notice>startproc: execve (/usr/sbin/faxq) [ /usr/sbin/faxq ], [
CONSOLE=/dev/console TERM=linux SHELL=/bin/sh progress=43
INIT_VERSION=sysvinit-2.85 REDIRECT=/dev/tty1 AUTOBOOT=YES COLUMNS=147
PATH=/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/etc:/usr/local/bin RUNLEVEL=5 PWD=/
PREVLEVEL=N LINES=55 SHLVL=2 BOOT_IMAGE=Linux splash=verbose sscripts=55
_=/sbin/startproc DAEMON=/usr/sbin/faxq ]
<notice>startproc: execve (/usr/lib/fax/hfaxd) [ /usr/lib/fax/hfaxd -i
hylafax -o 4557 -s 444 ], [ CONSOLE=/dev/console TERM=linux SHELL=/bin/sh
progress=43 INIT_VERSION=sysvinit-2.85 REDIRECT=/dev/tty1 AUTOBOOT=YES
COLUMNS=147 PATH=/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/etc:/usr/local/bin RUNLEVEL=5
PWD=/ PREVLEVEL=N LINES=55 SHLVL=2 BOOT_IMAGE=Linux splash=verbose
sscripts=55 _=/sbin/startproc DAEMON=/usr/lib/fax/hfaxd ]
Starting service HylaFAXdone

...somewhat later:
<notice>start services (run_faxmodem)
starting faxmodem
<notice>exit status of (run_faxmodem) is (0)

So, both show no error, but:
southpole:~ # faxstat
HylaFAX scheduler on southpole.axxite.internal: Running
Modem ttyS0 (+49 211 xxxxx): Waiting for modem to come ready

So,
- hylafax can setup&configure the modem
- it finds it during startup
- but it does not come ready.

Strange.

Or is the hylafax in SuSE 9.1 broken? before that it was running on Suse 7.3
& 8.2 for ages....

Max
