We hate when that happens.  :-)  

If you haven't already read the AdaptiveAnswer section of the config
(or hylafax-config) manpage, then please do.  If you have, please
expand a bit on your situation.

On the other hand, you could just spend the $5 a month for distinctive
ringing, and avoid all this hassle.  :-)
