Hmm.. Not sure what efax is.  Sounds like another package?  You shouldn't
need that either.  faxgetty should be running from inittab:

fg:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS1

But I think the RPM adds that.

Did you try to remove everything, and start over?

Dave

You seem to have NOT run faxmodem or edited the /etc/inittab to include
a faxgetty service for hylafax.

Keith

Tried editing the inittab to include respawning faxgetty befor I started over... there was not any success.  Removed the package via rpm -e then installed it again (same package no rebuild on it again) and setup fax service on external modem (proven to work, Incoming and Outgoing via efax) I edited the inittab to respawn faxgetty on ttyS0 (class 1) ... I suspect the software end of it is setup properly but am having serious doubts about the hardware definition.

Incoming faxes:
Modem goes off hook but never seems   to be able to negotiate a hand shake.

(these are file content from the /var/spool/fax/log)
this job is still pending, my modem goes off hook periodically atttempting to transmit (I assume)

During the install I answered a question re: the class of my modem pool with '1' since I was setting up only one modem (ttyS0) and it was a class 1.  As I said this modem was/is working fine sending recieving faxes with efax... but is disfunctional with hylafax.

[root@localhost log]# ps ax | grep fax
  737  p0 S    0:00 grep fax
  315  ?  S    0:00 /usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS0
  634  ?  S    0:00 /usr/sbin/faxq
  636  ?  S    0:00 /usr/sbin/hfaxd -i hylafax
[root@localhost log]# netstat -a | grep fax
tcp        0      0 *:hylafax               *:*                     LISTEN      [root@localhost log]#

This was realevant before but don't think  so now but am including it just in case.

'sendfax -d 6943015 text4fax' still confuses hylafax... Isn't Hylafax suposed to recognize file types and convert them?
root@localhost /root]# sendfax -d 6943015 text4fax
text4fax: Can not determine file type

Thanks in advance,
Doug L.
