Sorry, I'm OK now.

Faxgetty should be running on /dev/tty*, not the /dev/cua* craziness.

Have you got a getty running on the associated /dev/tty* file?
I'm having no difficulty with a Zyxel 1496 under SunOS, on /dev/ttyb.
