Hopefully without upsetting the careful balance of the universe could I
inquire why features like this haven't been added to the main hylafax
distribution yet?

There can be little argument this would be a useful addition to HylaFAX, ... once it appears on bugzilla (or is contributed in some other form) I'm sure you'll see it, or some version of it, in a hylafax.org release!
