The modem reset itself in mid-flight. Must be a USR...

The message "Failure to raise V.21 transmission carrier." came with the new version of hylafax (as you suggest to install).
I have an US Robotics Modem/FAX 56K External.


It is! It is a USR. :-)

Some of these kinds of errors will be normal when using USR modems. My guess is that the modem also goes on-hook during the process of resetting itself, meaning that it's irrecoverable. If it doesn't go on-hook, then maybe there's an opportunity for a workaround.
