Hello Robert,

why do you want to compile yourcelf?
Especially for a Linux newbie it might be easier to use pre-compiled  
packages. Do you need a specific feature or bug fix that is missing in  
this package?

Maybe the configure script does not find the TIFF Library you compiled  
yourself but a tiff library that is part of your distribution.
