Yahoooo... I got it fixed! There were two serial ports ttyS0 and ttyS1 on 
the linux machine. The fax modem was connected to a different port when we 
moved the machine. All I had to do was switch it back to the port the modem 
was configured for. Thats it! This is the height of silliness, isnt it.
