O.K.  Thanks for the ideas.   But I'm not getting any caller id 
information in minicom.  Normally, on my other modem I see it appear 
between the first and second rings.  There's another command: AT+VRID ( 
"Report caller id"), but it just returns "OK".  BTW, it is a Conexant 
chipset based external modem - Zoom Model 3049C.
