Login failed: 550 Cannot set privileges

I just installed hylafax on FreeBSD 4.3 Stable
and I get the above message.

I read the reccomendations about having entries in inetd.conf;

hylafax stream tcp nowait fax /usr/local/sbin/hfaxd hfaxd -I

and in /etc/ttys;

cuaa1   "/usr/local/sbin/faxgetty"      dialup  on  secure

which seems to make no difference.

The /var/log/messages reads;

May  2 01:46:54 d HylaFAX[603]: getpeername: Socket operation on non-socket
May  2 02:30:00 d HylaFAX[9455]: Could not create dev/null: Operation not permit
ted

May  2 10:40:33 d /usr/local/sbin/faxquit[12159]: FIFO.cuaa1: open: Device not c
onfigured
May  2 10:45:32 d HylaFAX[12182]: getpeername: Socket operation on non-socket

My /dev/null is there;

crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel    2,   2 May  2 11:11 /dev/null

and seems to work when I;

echo hithere > /dev/null

I'm uninstalled and reinstalled hylafax with no change.

There are no errors during the install, and I have both
faxq and faxgetty running;

ps ax | grep fax

12171  ??  I      0:00.35 /usr/local/sbin/faxgetty cuaa1
12173  ??  Is     0:00.03 /usr/local/sbin/faxq

Any idea where I go from here?
