Just 2 quick thoughts for you the above line will only start faxgetty
in run-levels 2 and 3. If your using RedHat the gui run level is 5.
Also in my inittab I have /dev/ttyS0.
S0:2345:respawn:/usr/local/sbin/faxgetty /dev/ttyS0
