fax a P4 pnm scan from sane scanimage

Hey,
I want to scan Textdocuments and fax them with hylafax.
The Scanimage proggy from sane produces a P4 pnm file. The pnmtotiff |
tifftofax produces an empty file, actually the ps2fax conversion messes
the file up (the ps file is still readable).
Sendfax does not send the pnm file directly.
Does anyone have a solution?
