If I remember well this is due to the fact that when you remove a fax hfax
sends an email  about this.
So if you have your MTA misconfigured (as regards to DNS) there is a 1 minute
timeout before giving up resolving the hostname.

Try commenting out, just for a test,  the call to $SENDMAIL in
/var/spool/fax/bin/notify
and see what happens.
