Without running faxgetty, you will always get the "Waiting for modem to
come ready" message unless an actual fax is sent.

Most people on the list would recoment using faxgetty.

What is the result of "ps -ax | grep fax"?

It looks like you're running hfaxd from inetd.  Again, I think most
people would recomend running it as a standalone if you are going to be
using HylaFAX frequently.

Also, HylaFAX does log information to syslog.  Bump up the
ServerTracing: value in the etc/config and see what comes out in your
logs.
