The culprit was the #&*^$ USR 28.8 modem. I'm using Multitech as of
yesterady and it (almost) works now. Thanks for responding.
I will also vote Yes on putting a "modems to avoid" section in the FAQ,
but now that just wouldn't be PC, would it :-)
