After sending the prologue signalling the modem was instructed to listen 
for signals from the sender... but after 7 seconds it heard nothing.

And then the caller hung up.

Use the Monitor app to actually record and listen to the audio that is 
coming in.  Alternatively you could use ztmonitor to watch for the 
volume levels (as rxgain seems to be a general issue with Asterisk and 
fax).  Or you could set "record" in your iaxmodem modem config file, 
restart iaxmodem, and then send me the *.raw files that get recorded in 
/tmp after the next failed fax.
