Is it possible, perhaps, that you have two different installations on 
the system simultaneously?  RPM installations generally go into /usr/ 
while tarball installations go to /usr/local/.

If you run a binary that then dynamically links with a mismatched 
dynamic library, for example, you can get this kind of thing happening.
