Of course there were error messages, I just didn't look close enough. Here's
what I grepped in /var/log/messages:

15:47:47 FaxGetty[29138]: /dev/ttyS0: Can not initialize modem.
15:51:04 FaxGetty[29138]: Unable to setup modem on /dev/ttyS0; giving up after 2 attempts
15:51:04 FaxGetty[29138]: CLOSE /dev/ttyS0
15:51:04 FaxQueuer[12608]: MODEM /dev/ttyS0 appears to be wedged
15:51:04 FaxQueuer[12608]: MODEM WEDGED: bin/wedged "ttyS0" "/dev/ttyS0"
15:51:04 FaxQueuer[12608]: NOTIFY exit status: 0 (19814)
15:51:04 FaxGetty[2052]: OPEN /dev/ttyS0  HylaFAX (tm) Version 4.2.1
15:52:13 FaxGetty[2052]: /dev/ttyS0: Can not initialize modem.

Can somebody give me a clue?
