Okay, I looked at /var/log/messages.1, and here is what I found.  It looks
like the problem began right after the last successful fax received.

Do those "DLE" codes refer to voice actions?  Is it possible that a
handset was picked up mid-call and that could have screwed things up?

Looking through my logs, I count a total of 5 instances in the last month
of a session containint a "Received premature V.34 termination" error, so
this is not the first time that has happened.  This is, however, the first
time that the modem has found itself in this "wedged" state.
