Apache did essentially this by declaring even-numbered
releases (2.2, 2.4, etc) stable, and odd-numbered
releases (2.1, 2.3, etc) unstable, making point
releases under each as needed, e.g., "2.2.3" stable
with minimal bug or security fixes over "2.2.2" versus
say "2.1.4", unstable, but better then "2.1.3".
One site, two release paths, minimal upheaval.
