I never used one for dial-up, but I hear that they were good modems for 
data calls.  However, just because they do data well doesn't mean that 
they do fax just as well.

For the most part any old modem that has a Rockwell chipset that 
supports Class 1 will outperform that USR modem.  You should be able to 
find those for free, I'd expect... if you know someone with an old modem 
in their computer or on a shelf.
