Yes, using kppp on ttyS0 no problem. I can use cu as root on ttyS0 and it 
responds. I can use the modem terminal in the kppp configure dialog for the 
modem, ttyS0, and it responds. 

So, yes, I am sure that ttyS0 is the modem. I can use efax with ttyS0 under 
ksendfax instead of HylaFAX and it sends faxes. Two problems with efax:

1: to receive, must explicitly command to do so, does not monitor (at least as 
far as I have been able to decipher from the man page
2: have to use it as root, ordinary user cannot use to send faxes.

The problem with HylaFAX is it hangs waiting for the modem to come free and 
never knows that it is.
