Hi Jonas,
is /dev/ttyS1 writeable to hylafax ? (user and group uucp)
did you do a: faxaddmodem ttyS1 ?
Did you try to connect to the modem with
minicom /dev/ttyS1
or
cu -l /dev/ttyS1
