A long time ago (pre-pentium days) it was pretty much impossible to 
expect fax-protocol timings to be met by a PC processor while handling a 
fax image (decoding, etc).  So, as the bulk of the fax protocol work is 
left up to the modem firmware when using Class 2, many people 
standardized on that, and many manufacturers never even offered Class 1 
on their modems.  As PC processors got faster this requirement went 
away, but it still took a while for people and manufacturers to realize 
that the PC processor could nicely handle fax protocol with Class 1 usage.

HylaFAX Class 1 was thus widely unused until about the 4.1beta3 days 
when many HylaFAX users started switching from Class 2 to Class 1 
following the efforts of a few developers.  And, even then, the Class 1 
code was only about as reliable as the average Class 2 modem firmware.  
That was about four years ago.  So, depending on who you listened to 
back then, the MT1932ZDX was commonly recommended.

Since that time MultiTech has come out with some very fine Class 2 (2.1) 
implementations with their 5634 series, and, HylaFAX's Class 1 is far, 
far more reliable.

"selecting a modem").  It still may be a bit too vague for you, but this 
question gets asked very frequently on this list, so the archives should 
show you some more detailed information.
