I have had the same problems with this modem
see:

this problem occurs with brother fax machines only.
they identify themselves as:
NSF remote fax equipment: Brother Intellifax 770
or
NSF remote fax equipment: Brother

I will check this config file and see if the brother machines will then talk 
to the modem correctly.
