[hylafax-users] USR 5601 98F7 giving error: T.30 T2 timeout, expected page not received

Howdy list folks,

I am having this receive problem almost every time from certain senders 
(this is a different server than I was discussing a few weeks ago).

The situation is as follows:

Linux (RedHat 9)
HylaFAX 4.2.0 from rpm (hylafax-4.2.0-1rh9)
Multitech modem on ttyS5 (this one is send only so it is not involved in 
the problem)
USR internal 56K modem on ttyS4 (this is receive only and has the problem):
ati0: 5601
ati1: 98F7
ati2: OK
ati3: U.S. Robotics 56K FAX INT Rev. 5.22.16

In this set of attempts, the fax was 12 pages.  It was sent gradually 
over 9 attempts (log for 3rd attempt attached) (communicating by voice 
as to which pages had worked).  On some tries less than half a page went 
through before the error, sometimes 3 or 4 pages went through.

This same setup has been chugging along pretty reliably for several 
months with 4.2.0 and a year or two before that with 4.1.8.  Can the 
modem just be aging and having components burn out or becoming 
unpredictable?

The 2550 ms timeout which accounted for my earlier problem (on a 
different server) does not seem to be the problem here.  The timeouts 
seem to be a different length (5 s) here, and anyway, I don't think this 
is a Topic chipset (though I guess I don't know how to tell that 
definitively).

Is it possible the oldness/slowness of the CPU could be a factor here?  
It is a Pentium MMX 166 MHz but is not running anything else and is 
generally at about 99% idle.

Are there any suggestions as to possible reasons or remedies?
