man hylafax-config:
SpeakerVolume
ModemSetVolumeCmd
If faxgetty's ServerTracing/SessionTracing are high enough you will be
able to see all the communication between faxgetty and the modem during
the initialisation sequence.

Irregardless of other problems, it probably turned the volume down.
