Re: [hylafax-users] Differentiation between incoming fax lines

I've a fax line, say 123-456-9000 which connects to a fax machine. I
have had three additional phone numbers, 9001, 9002 and 9003 set up
with the phone company and programmed to route to the 123-456-
9000 number. So, a fax sent to the 9003 number comes out on the fax
attached to the 9000 line.

If I replaced the fax machine with a Hyla Fax fax server, could I
configure Hyla Fax so that it distinguished between the fax numbers
used. eg. if someone sent a fax to 9001 the fax would be e-mailed to
Bob, one sent to 9002 would go to Ted and 9003 would go to Robert?

Probably not.

What you are wanting is called "DID" service. If you search the archives for "DID" (all caps) you will find lots and lots of correspondence on the matter. With DID the telco signals to the modem the number that the caller dialed. HylaFAX, then, can take that number and use it for whatever you want, e.g., routing the fax to the recipient. Of course, this requires that you get DID service from your telco and a modem that supports it.

Since it sounds like you're talking about a single analog line, the most horizontal transition that would get you DID service would be to order what is generally called an "analog DID trunk" (in the US it usually runs $40-$50 per month) and an analog DID modem (usually the MultiTech MT5634ZBA-DID is the recommended option there).

However, if you're talking about more than 4-5 different analog DID trunks all set up in a hunt group then you'll probably be better off with costs by looking at digital equipment, such as a T1 telco connection with a T1 modem (such as the Patton Datafire 2977).

Could Hyla Fax be programmed to forward incoming faxes to another
fax number? eg faxes for Bob on 9001 are routed to his site office fax

machine?

Yes. This is quite easily done by "sending" the received fax with faxrcvd's FaxDispatch. Note, however, that analog DID trunks cannot be used for sending faxes (only receiving). Thus you must have a separate traditional analog line (can connect to the same modem as the DID trunk, if needed) to do that.
