Hello Gavin,
it looks as if faxgetty is running which does not understand the format
of config.faxCAPI. (It's different from the normal modem configuration
files.)
On Debian you have a file /etc/default/hylafax. In this file you must
set USE_FAXGETTY=no. This tells hylafax not to start faxgetty and not
to expect a faxgetty process started by init.
With a modem this would be a send-only configuration, but capi4hylafax
works very different from analog modems. You will be able to receive
faxes anyway if it's allowed in config.faxCAPI.
