I had a very similar problem.

Hylafax was having trouble using the font path data I was giving it
through its configuration files. It wanted to stay with hard coded
paths. I solved the problem by setting up one symbolic link to the
actual FontPath/FontMap location, and in addition, copied one missing
font & modified the font map to make it findable.
