Thanks - I'll read the documentation. On a related note is there an accepted
standard number of rings before answer one could expect from a fax machine?
i.e. so I can hang up if the call is not answered after X rings. I know this
won't always be accurate, but what is the general rule for this?

BUSY is not the same as NOCARRIER

man hylafax-config, and spend some time reading about MaxDials, MaxTries,
and NoCarrierRetrys

As long as your modem can reliably distinguish BUSY and NOCARRIER, you
should be fine.
