Re: [hylafax-users] Brooktrout or Eicon

Hi all,

We currently use the Eicon Diva Server 24 port ISDN/T1 card and it is
working well with hylafax and inbound DID-based routing. One thing I
do
not like is the need to recompile the kernel driver everytime a new
errata kernel comes along (security fixes, etc). We only have one
card
and the downtime the kernel compilation and testing creates (not
having
another card to run on while this one is down) is prohibitive at worst
and annoying at best.

All kernel hardware drivers must (well, should) be rebuilt with each kernel upgrade. The IDE drivers, the RTC driver, the AGP driver, the sound card drivers, the network driver, I2C drivers, the serial driver, Comtrol RocketModem drivers, MultiTech ISI drivers, etc. Why whould Eicon or BrookTrout kernel hardware drivers be any different?

That said, it is sometimes (often) possible to use a module built for one kernel version on a different kernel version. But I don't think that's really advisable.

If downtime is a problem then I would recommend getting another HylaFAX server going to back-up the one you've taken down during that downtime.
