No, faxconfig does not cause the config file to be re-read. You need to submit the configuration changes with the command:


faxconfig -m ttyS1 ModemReadyState D


Ah! When I tested faxconfig, never having used it before, I put a colon after the directive like this:


faxconfig -m ttyS1 ModemReadyState: D

which is how it worked in my config.ttyS1 file.

Thanks for setting me straight. No colons in faxconfig.
