Re: [hylafax-users] problems with Multitech Modem MT 2834ZDXb

Multi-Tech fax modem models split into three basic catagories:

MTFirmware: Models built using Lucent (now Agere) data pumps (where the DSP code was supplied by by Agere) and Multi-Tech controller code that ran on a Z180. These had class 2 support only but it was among the best class 2 implementations around. They had issues with receive related to data pump issues (I believe). Agere has long since abandoned these data pumps and so updates regarding DSP code are no longer available. As far as sending goes they had a notorious problem that caused a high rate of +FHNG:52,54's (the problem was carrier was dropped before the RTC got out of the modem's buffer). This can be fixed by calling MTS tech support and obtaining the FHNG54 fix for that model.

AgereFirmware: Models built starting mid-late 90's that had Agere data pump and controller on one chip (Z180 based again). The firmware had class 1 and 2 support to start with. The V.92 models have been enhanced so that they support classes 1.0, 2.0 and 2.1. Support for V.34 faxing was added and error correction in classes 2.0 and 2.1.  That was all done by Agere. Multi-Tech further enhanced the modem to support real-time compression conversion meaning that data sent to the modem in one format (say MH or MR or MMR) can be converted on the fly to transmit it in other format (if say the remote fax machine doesn't support that.

ConexantFirmware: Models starting in the mid-late 90's that had a Conexant (formerly Rockwell) data pumps. These are pretty much stock Conexant firmware with little tweaks by Multi-Tech to fix bugs or to get the modem approved for different country or hardware requirements. These modems support class 1 and class 2. They do not support V.34 faxing.

People might want to chime in on whether they have had better experiences receiving (as that seems to be the major issue) with the ConexantFirmware versus AgereFirmware modems in class 1. The controller code and DSP code for these are obviously different. But in class 1 the only significant difference is the DSP code. I don't have clear data on which is "better". It probably will depend upon the line conditions that the particular modem is used on, as different DSP implementations handle different line impairments better or worse.

Below I have listed all the models (that I could think of) and the maximum data and fax rates that they support.

MTFirmware models:

MT224BA - Max speed 2400 data, 9600 fax
MT932BA - Max speed 9600 data, 9600 fax
MT932BR - ditto, but rack mounted
MT1432BA -  Max speed 14400 data, 14400 fax
MT1432BR - ditto, but rack mounted
MT1432MR - ditto, but managed rack mounted
MT1932ZDX - Max speed 19200 data, 14400 fax - (low cost - plastic chassis, no leased line, etc)
MT2834ZDX - Max speed 28800 data, 14400 fax - (low cost - plastic chassis, no leased line, etc)
MT2834BA - Max speed 33600 data, 14400 fax
MT2834BR - ditto, but rack mounted
MT2834MR - ditto, but managed rack mounted (3 modems per card)
MT2834MR6 - ditto, but managed rack mounted (6 modems per card)
MT2834ZDXb - ditto, but low cost (plastic chassis, no leased line, etc)

AgereFirmware models:

MT2834ZDXb-u - short lived model that did what MT3334ZDX does now
MT3334ZDX - Max speed 33600 data, 14400 fax
MT5634BA - Max speed 56K, V.90, 14400 fax
MT5634ZPX-PCI - ditto, internal PCI card
MT5634ZBA-USB - ditto, USB
ISI5634PCI/4 - ditto, PCI multiport 4 ports
ISI5634PCI/8 - ditto, PCI multiport 8 ports
MT5634ZBA-V92 - Max speed 56K, V.92, 33600 fax
MT5634ZBA-PCI-V92 - ditto, internal PCI card
MT5634ZBA-USB-V92 - ditto, USB
ISI5634PCI/4-V92 - ditto, PCI multiport 4 ports
ISI5634PCI/8-V92 - ditto, PCI multiport 8 ports

ConexantFirmware models:

MT5600ZDX - Max speed 56K, V.90, 14400 fax
MT5600BA - ditto, LCD display, leased line
MT5656ZDX - Max speed 56K, V.92, 14400 fax
MT5656BA - ditto, LCD display, leased line

I hope that that answers your questions

Steve,

What is the difference between MT2834ZXD and MT2834ZXDb?

Best regards:
Milen

Milen,

I am sad to inform you that there is no active development on this product
anymore. You can tinker with the receive sensitivity, and see if it makes
any difference.

S38 controls the receive sensitivity. Its default is 43 which means -43dbm.
You could try going to 44 or 45 and see if that helps at all. As you go
lower (higher numbers), the modem will have trouble distinguishing between
noise and signal and may not drop carrier when it should.

I would recommend up dating to our MT5634ZBA-V92 if you want to use a modem
with active fax development on it.

Subject: [hylafax-users] problems with Multitech Modem MT 2834ZDXb

Hi,

I have problems with a multitech modem MT2834ZDXb in receive-only
configuration
It fails to receive faxes with the one of the following errors:

1. T.30 T2 timeout, expected page not received
2. COMREC error
3. Missing EOL after 5 seconds (section 3.2/T.4)

Is there any known poblems with this type of modems?
Do I need to change any parameters in modem config file?

Thank you for your time and help!
Best regards:
Milen

P.S. I've attached 3 sessions transmitions bellow:
