For example, something like :

ls -ltr $FILES 2>/dev/null | awk '{
   printf("%s_%s_%s_%s", $6, $7, $8, ++i) >file
   system mv $9 $file)
}'

This needs some work, of course, but you get the idea....

Use ls - ltru to get hours and minuites too
If you have caller id, that can give even more accurate fax times.
