Thanks!  It works as a dream.  Actually, I tried many drivers but didn't
think that
was the problem as ps2pdf managed to convert the output'ed files
regardless of driver type -
was I wrong or what..

I've see this as well.  If you can remove all the lines above:

%!PS-Adobe-3.0

and resubmit with sendfax I think things will work as expected.  The
extra lines at the top of your postscript file are being added by the
windows printer driver.  These lines seem to convince HylaFAX that this
file is text and not postscript.  I use the "HP LaserJet III PostScript
Cartridge" driver in XP and it produces postscript files without the
additional lines which are converted correctly by HylaFAX without
modification.
