I don't think so.  In class 1, 1.0 if all it would be implemented 
entirely in the software - no AT command.  So for hylafax it's doubtful 
that polling is even possible for Class 1 modems.
But, as a long shot, might try  

Class2SPLCmd             ""

I'd try faxing to other machines to see if the problems persists.  It's 
more likely indicative of some other problem, perhaps with the receiver.  

Your last recourse is to replace with a class 2, 2.0, or 2.1  fax board, 
which hylafax seems to work better with.
