You were absolutely right :(
It was a problem with priveleges - the data was in there (host, user
etc) but regardless of flushing, nothing happened until I shut down
mysqld and restarted it - suddenly I could connect.
BTW, I have a more questions on Cypheus - should I ask them here or
direct them to the developers?
