Thanks for that.  We tried another modem, an older 33K sportster and by
the time I could type less /var/log/messages it came up.  It took about
10 minutes to do the installation on  the production box.  Go figure.
Since it is working I don't image that they want to putz with it.  I
hate not knowing what is wrong but at least it is working.  

Thanks again for the replies.  THis appears to be a terrific piece of
software.

Is there an easy way to not send the email to faxmaster if everything is
ok?  The faxes are simply printed and then distributed via sneakernet so
the email just clutters up the admins inbox.
