Well, it turns out that the message from named was the big clue after 
all.  It led me to see that sendmail was running during the unexplained 
delay period, trying to figure out where "FaxMaster" (=bruce)  was.  I 
changed FaxMaster in faxrcvd to a fully qualified mail address, and 
voila!  No more delay!

I can't explain why the problem didn't occur with the other modem, but I 
can live with a small mystery like that.
