Does this mean that you ran "faxaddmodem [device]"?

Here is something missing, if your modem was recognized by HylaFAX:
Should be like:
"Modem /dev/ttyS0 (+[configured number]): Running and idle"

Try running "faxmodem [your device name]" and see if it works then.
Is there a etc/config.[devicename] file?
