I definitely understand your concerns.  Rockwell (a.k.a. Connexant) HCF 
modems are fairly cheap.  I'm using two Aztec MDP modems with the HCF 
chipset (they install as /dev/ttySHCF0, /dev/ttySHCF1...), and I'd be 
happy to share my configs and hacks with you and the rest of the group. 
 Just make sure you *do not* get an HSF modem because the driver does 
not support any kind of faxing.
