does &W a persistent change of the config inside your modem? if yes then 
you should and need use it only once (from e.g. minicom) 
because some modems hardware allow only a limited number of 
persistent changes and may/can break if this limit is exceeded
(though this number is very high in general)

test with atS38=? after a modem power down
