this is not a whfc issue.
your modem stops responding to the hylafax server software.
try to reset your modem.
can you reproduce it?
try to use a lower baudrate
use XON/XOFF handshake
use usr in class 1
there is an option to make hylafax pause some time between AT commands, 
try this option with a value of some 10 to some 100 milliseconds.
