Back in the dark ages of computing (circa 1988), I had a FAX card (not
a modem) for a PC which had identical performance to a FAX machine,
plugged into an 8MHz 286. My only performance problems occurred when
I was trying to multitask with Desqview, and I got rid of those by
ugprading my serial interface's UART to a 16450 (it has been an 8250).

I'm reasonably sure you shouldn't be having performance problems related
to the machine you're running this on. ;-)

Of course, if you want to be sure, run 'top' or 'uptime' and see what
the load average looks like during a fax.
