As far as I know these things boil down to only a few possibilities...
- could be that adaptive answer is getting in the way. Search the archives
for "adaptive answer" This gets asked a couple times per week...
- could be a HylaFAX bug, but I don't think that's likely... this is more
of a hardware controlled thing. In my experience, these handshaking
problems occur irrespective of the software.
- most likely: hardware/firmware incompatibilities. Try a new modem.
